TSSDL Under 15 Championship

Cahir Park  1-2  Clonmel Town

Cahir Park fell at the final hurdle in their attempt to wrest the Chamionship from arch-rivals Town despite a very strong first-half performance.

For large periods of the second half, either side could have taken the initiative - it was Clonmel who struck first finishing past Opala on 56 mins. They were two ahead after a quick break from defence caught the hosts flat-footed, ten minutes to play.

With the dismissal of Keelin Hickey and a flurry of yellow cards, Cahir could have laid down but, true to form they kept the pressure on the visitor's goal and were duly rewarded with five mins left- Liam Casey finishing a great free-kick to the net.

So Town win back-to-back Championships - well done to both teams on a most entertaining rivalry carried on for yet another year.

Cahir Park AFC: Bartosz Opala, Jamie Fitzgerald, Aaron Murphy,  Gerry Cronin, Cormac Looby; Kieran Davis, Ian Flannery, Keelin Hickey, Stephen Duggan, Liam Casey; David Finnane.

Subs: Mikey O'Connor for Duggan, Lorcan Blake for Fitzgerald, Niall McKenna, Chris English for Davis, Liam Ryan for English (inj)

St Michaels 1-5 Cahir Park

Cahir Park collected all three points on Saturday to put themselves in position for a Tuesday night showdown with arch-rivals Clonmel Town, winner to take the title of Under 15 champions for 2010/11.

Playing on a vastly improved pitch at Cooke Park, Cahir played some great one-touch football and had all five goals scored before a late reply from the penalty spot for Michaels.

Two goals on the day from David Finnane with one each from Ian Flannery, Chris English and Liam Casey.

Cahir Park AFC: Bartosz Opala, Jamie Fitzgerald, Aaron Murphy,  Gerry Cronin, Lorcan Blake; Kieran Davis, Ian Flannery, Keelin Hickey, Stephen Duggan, Liam Casey; David Finnane.

Subs: Mikey O'Connor for Hickey, Niall McKenna for Flannery, Chris English for Finnane, Liam Ryan for Duggan

Saturday 9 April 2011
TSSDL Under 15 Championship

Peake Villa 0-3 Cahir Park

It was back to winning ways for the Under 15s in this one with Peake coming off a defeat and hoping for better. Keelin Hickey, in a new role on the left wing put daylight between the sides after just 70secs with an exquisite finish from a free-kick. The hosts, buoyed on by this, had several chances on Opala's goal but with wayward shooting, all came to nothing. Aaron Murphy and Gerry Cronin kept things quiet at the back while a marauding Cormac Looby made some effective inroads on the Villa goal, working well with Hickey as strong challenges from Ian Flannery kept things in control in the midfield third.

David Finnane put in a good strong performance always troubling the Peake defence and from one of these attacks, Park were two ahead when awarded a penalty in the 60th min with Finnane taken down in the box. Liam Casey, not long on as sub, finished confidently but still Peake refused to wilt. More chances on the Cahir goal went a-begging as the Park's more effective play and determination kept them in control. Good work between Casey, Finnane, Flannery and a returning Niall McKenna, back from injury after 18 months, set up the third for the visitors - Finnane feeding Casey to strike home confidently from close range with five mins to play. With games away to St Michaels and home to Clonmel Town left in the season, Cahir have another chance of silverware within sight, duly deserved on current form.

Cahir Park AFC: Bartosz Opala, Jamie Fitzgerald, Aaron Murphy,  Gerry Cronin, Cormac Looby; Lorcan Blake, Ian Flannery, Chris English, Keelin Hickey; Liam Ryan, David Finnane.

Subs: Mikey O'Connor, Liam Casey for Liam Ryan,  Stephen Duggan for Lorcan Blake, Niall McKenna for Chris English.

Saturday 26 February 2011
TSSDL Under 15 Tipperary Cup
 Cahir Park 1-4  Clonmel Town

As the teams to contest the Cup Finals in most of the recent years, it was unfortunate that one of these fine sides would go out in the quarter-finals. However with rain and particularly wind playing a vital factor throughout the game, a classic was never on the cards. Clonmel started well, soaking up a period of home pressure with Stephen Duggan and Chris English prominent.  With goals from Eoin Kehoe and Paraig Looram, Town were 2-0 up by 20mins, making the most of possession in the crowded box of home keeper Batosz Opala and, with the second goal, making the best of weather conditions to beat Opala from the edge of the box.

In the second half, Cahir came out a stronger side with determined effort from Cormac Looby and Keelin Hickey, forced wave after wave of attack on the visitors goal. They were rewarded on 53mins - cahirparkafc.com Man of the Match Ian Flannery capping off a strong midfield performance with a screamer from 25 yds flying past Town's netminder. As a Mikey O'Connor-inspired  Cahir piled on the pressure, it was perhaps to be expected that tempers would be tested. In a period when the good name of the visitors was besmirched, Town had defender Michael Connolly dismissed and conceded a penalty to allow Cahir  an opportunity back in to the contest. Unfortunately for the Park, David Finnane's penalty was well saved by Clonmel's keeper Michael Boland, this proving to be the turning point of the clash.

With renewed vigour, Clonmel forced a corner and with Cahir more interested in attack, allowed a defensive slip to allow the concession of a third goal from the visitors, through Kevin Fahey. Crestfallen, Cahir then conceded a free on the edge of the box which was confidently planted in the bottom right-hand corner by Kevin Kirwin to give Town a three-goal lead by game end.

Cahir Park AFC: Bartosz Opala, Jamie Fitzgerald, Aaron Murphy,  Keelin Hickey, Cormac Looby; Stephen Duggan, Ian Flannery, Liam Casey, Gerry Cronin; Chris English, David Finnane.

Subs: Mikey O'Connor for Cronin, Lorcan Blake for Fitzgerald, Kieran Davis, Liam Ryan

A pulsating game at Duneske on Saturday last looked like it was going to end honours even until one minute from time when David Finnane broke through in the penalty box, was pulled down by a brave St Michaels keeper and dusted himself off to finish confidently to the keeper's left.

After 21 mins cahirparkafc.com Man of the Match Cormac Looby had put the home side ahead  with a fantastic effort from a tight angle whistling past the Tipp side's netminder, Luke O'Dea. Immediately after the sides were level with Bartosz Opala conceding a quality chipped effort from Darren Neville.

An understrength Cahir side had the majority of the play, particularly after weathering a Michaels storm in the first 10 mins of the second half, when the visitors could easily have led by two but for some heroic saves by Opala.

Efforts by Finnane, Liam Casey, Stephen Duggan and Chris English all went a-begging  whilst Aaron Murphy and Kieran Davis impressed at the back, quelling many quick Saints breaks.

A fair result on the balance of play, the Park back to winning ways.

Cahir Park AFC: Bartosz Opala, Jamie Fitzgerald, Aaron Murphy,  Kieran Davis, Kenneth Collins; Cormac Looby, Ian Flannery, Liam Casey, Stephen Duggan; David Finnane, Liam Ryan.

The Under 15s started the year disappointingly with a home defeat to Peake Villa who were, in truth, full value for their victory showing more determination throughout the game.

With early chances from Liam Casey and Lorcan Blake spurned, Peake were first to score after 22 mins. Their second, a fine long-range effort with 10 mins left beat Bartosz Opala from 20 yds out, weather conditions making handling difficult through the entire game.

In between David Finnane, Chris English and Dion Butler all saw their efforts either well saved by a strong goalkeeper or change direction in swirling wind to end up off-target.

Cahir Park AFC: Bartosz Opala, Jamie Fitzgerald, Aaron Murphy,  Mikey O'Connor, Cormac Looby; Gerry Cronin, Keelin Hickey, Liam Casey, Lorcan Blake; David Finnane, Dion Butler.

Goals from Dion Butler - against his former club - from David Finnane, Ian Flannery and Chris English secured three more away points for the Park in a game played predominantly in the opposition's half. In truth there could have been quite a few more goals with Lorcan Blake, Cormac Looby and Aaron Murphy all going close after Butler's goal on 6 mins. Finnane's bullet just before the break, after an individual run, saw light between the sides at Tommy Keating's half-time whistle.

Ian Flannery was next to hit the net - on the hour mark - with a clever chip after a determined breach of the home defence. Liam Casey had a couple of attempts on goal before Chris English fired home from the edge of the box after 71mins to put a justified four goals between the teams at match end.

Cahir Park AFC: Bartosz Opala, Cormac Looby, Aaron Murphy, Keelin Hickey, Jamie Fitzgerald; Gerry Cronin, Ian Flannery, Chris English; David Finnane, Lorcan Blake, Dion Butler.

The Under 15s were on top within the first minute with a great triangular passing move between a very effective Cormac Looby, Dion Butler and David Finnane allowing Finnane creep in ahead of the Celtic keeper, John Smith. Altough on top for the rest of the first half, some wayward finishing from the hosts, and a Gerry Cronin header disallowed,  meant there was still only the one goal between the sides at the break.

After 54 mins Finnane struck again following up on a shot by Butler to head the ball home from close range. Later efforts from Gerry Cronin and Ian Flannery were spurned by Smith, only Looby beating him to see his effort cannon off the crossbar. With the rain bucketing down and no further goalmouth action, the Park were glad to grab the points and run for cover, the scoreline affording them a return to second place in the league table.

The Under 15s were well on top in this one at Newhill Park. Cahirparkafc.com man of the match David Finnane scored a hat-trick in the first half with goals by Chris English and Stephen Duggan both on target in the second 45.  An effective Lorcan Blake on the right wing provided the pinpoint cross from the right for the first goal on 7 mins with Butler and Finnane combining fior the second.  English provided the supply for Finnane to finish a fine solo effort on 33 mins. Both second half strikes caught the opposing keeper out on his right-hand post with clinical finishes from Duggan and English in the 61st and 64 mins.  A strrong defensive performance then kept any hopes of a Kevins fightback at bay, Clonmel Celtic the next visitors.

Cahir Park AFC: Bartosz Opala, Aaron Murphy, Jamie Fitzgerald, Keelin Hickey, Dion Buckley; Chris English, Gerry Cronin, Ian Flannery, Lorcan Blake; David Finnane, Dion Butler.

The Under 15s exited the National Cup at the first hurdle despite a battling performance from the home team who went behind to a Mikey O'Connor own goal on 20mins. Both goals were threatened as each side sought a score but Bartosz Opala coped well as the host's netminder.  A fine first half performance by Aaron Murphy at right back was crowned with an equalizing goal with a speculative shot from the edge of the box on 58 mins. A break down the left provided the winner with a cross across the box finished to the net at the far post. Villa march on, just about deserving the win on balance of play.

The goals flowed in this one in a one-sided affair. Lorcan Blake openend the scoring on 6 mins after Liam Ryan's shot came back off the keeper.  A fine performance from Kenneth Collins saw him add the second. Dion Butler made it three before the break with a classy free-kick finished to the net. Butler added a second for himself inside the second 45. Substitute Ian Flannery had two for the day and could have had more but for some wayward finishing. With the 14s representation acquitting themselves well, Mikey O'Connor was on hand to apply the header that wrapped up the scoring making a bad day for the Clogheen boys who tried hard to the bitter end.

Award winners at the This Is Your Life event on Friday night Cahir Park under 15s were into action quickly on the Saturday morning with a trip to Celtic Park, Bansha. The home side, showing greater grit and determination didn't let the visitors have it all their own way but it was the boys in white who broke the deadlock on 11 mins, Chris English finishing well after a route one routine, keeper Bartosz Opala providing the pass.

An effective Mikey O'Connor on the left had a hand in the first of four goals for David Finnane, a corner from Liam Casey providing the second. Three-nil up at the break, the Park defence were breached twice early in the second half with two Celtic piledrivers from twenty yards finding the net before Finnane's final attempt reached it's destination after an earlier onslaught had come to nothing.

Jim Buckley's under 15s were taught a footballing lesson in the first game of their season, at Duneske on Saturday last with De La Salle, one of Waterford's finest schoolboy sides, displaying a mature, aggressive performance. Great win for the lads, who haven't been having the rub of the green lately. On Saturday they played out of their skins. First goal was scored after 10 mins , Adam Halley got the ball on the right wing cut inside and hit a shot from 30 yards out which flew into the net. Cahir defended brillantly and gave the opposing team few chances. The vsitors had a couple of decent chances in the second half to go two up, but with only two minutes left a deflected shot from a Kevins player found the back of the Park net. Instead of the heads going down, the boys picked themselves up and straight from the kick off a ball was played through to Man of the Match Darragh Conway who coolly slotted home to take the three points for Cahir.

A fine performance here against a fancied Moyglass side. All goals came from Kenny Cunningham n a game where Sean Muphy, amongst many others, made a great effort. This side are now comfortable in mid-table in the league.

Visitng the Tower Field in Thurles, the 11s, under manager Brendan Rowe, came away with all three points in a pulsating game where, once again, the boys put in a great effort. Two hat-tricks here - from Lorcan O'Dwyer and from Kenny Cunningham - both surely names to watch for in the future. The Park had to show character in a match where after being 4-0 up, they had  to tack two more goals on after Villa had threatened to share the points at one stage.

Fine result here for the 11Bs. Kieran Lambert and Daragh O'Leary were on the scoresheet in a game in which the Park were always comfortable. The result leaves them in mid-table for the season so far in a competitive league.

The Park composed themselves well in the second 45 and, despite going a further goal behind, were to find the net twice before the finish, the goals coming from Cavan McKenna and Darragh Conway.

Wednesday May 19 2010 – TSSDL u14 Tipperary Cup Final

Peake Villa 0 Cahir Park 4

Things improved greatly for the under 14s on Wednesday evening last when they capped off an excellent season with a 4-0 win to bring home the Tipp Cup for the fourth time in five seasons. The boys got off to a good start with David Finnane scoring after 8mins. The game saw several half chances for both sides before Finnane hit the net again just before to break, a score which settled the team. Finnane set up Joshua Keane's headed goal 5mins after the restart and then completed his hat trick and sealed the win with 15mins to go. A solid defensive performance with goalkeeper Bartosz Opala was led by the referee's Man of the Match Tom Kirwan. Keelin Hickey, Aaron Murphy (Dion Buckley), Kieran Davis (Cormac Looby) kept Peake Villa's attack at bay while the Park midfield of captain Ian Flannery, Gerry Cronin and sub Mickey o Connor kept the attacks going with some fine passing and possession football. Wingers Stephan Duggan (Lorcan Blake), Jamie Fitzgerald (Liam Casey), and forwards David Finnane(3) and Joshaua Keane(1) were a constant handful for Villa's defence.

Saturday May 15 2010 – TSSDL u14 Championship Final

Clonmel Town 2 Cahir Park 0

A disappointing return from the Tower Field in Thurles on Saturday 15 May in the final of the league for this season. The Park were chasing their fourth title in a row, having met the same opposition in all of the previous encounters. In truth though, Town were stronger in all departments displaying a real hunger to make up for the Cup semi-final defeat a few days beforehand. With Liam Casey going close early, followed by a Stephen Duggan effort from the right it was Town who went ahead 13mins in with a well-converted free-kick flying past Bartosz Opala’s left hand. On the 20th min mark the lead was doubled, a Clonmel corner allowing an unmarked Town attacker on the goal-line to make the most of the chance. With some second half changes in positioning and personnel yielding nothing more, the game petered out as a contest, Town getting one over on their greatest rivals.

Cahir Park AFC: Bartosz Opala; Dion Buckley, Tom Kirwin, Keelin Hickey, Kieran Davis; Liam Casey, Gerry Cronin, Ian Flannery, Stephen Duggan; Josh Keane, David Finnane. Subs: Mikey O’Connor for Duggan, Aaron Murphy for Buckley, Cormac Looby for Davis, Jamie Fitzgerald for Casey, Kevin Griffin, Lorcan Blake (inj), Brian McKenna (inj).

Tipperary Cup Final: Cahir Park AFC 0 St Kevins 2

A disappointing day for the Park's 15s against the Kevins under 15s on Bank Holiday Monday when the two great rivals at this age group came up aginst each other for the second time in a week. Last Monday's win by Kevins saw them crowned this year's league champions. However, a similar scoreline on Monday last saw the Borris side complete the double in a final played in a sunny Celtic Park in Bansha. Despite being on top for most of the game and having the chance to be comfortable by half-time a Kevins defence managed to keep on top and were a great help in spurning all the Cahir chances before themselves converting twice at the opposite end to secure the victory.

Squad; A Wall, C Nugent, E O'Gorman, E Byrne, J O'Reilly, B Shanahan, R McGrath, C Crowe, J Coffey, S Tobin, J Cashen, S Ryan, E Wootten, M Byrne, S Williams, S Murphy

Team captain Simon Williams was presented with the Mitchell Cup after the game. Well done to all.

 Under 11 Tipperary Cup Final

Peake Villa 0 Cahir Park AFC As 3

The Park wrapped up their season in the best way possible with a hard-fought over Peake Villa on a surprisingly sunny evening in Two-Mile-Borris on Wednesday  last. Cahir were on top of the game very early on but despite the best efforts a draining season took it’s toll and at the break both sides were scoreless, this after a fine Liam Casey effort after just 4 mins almost broke the deadlock. Keelin Hickey had a rocket shot go just over on 24 while a minute later David Finnane saw his header go wide from an Ian Flannery cross from the right.

Just seconds inside the second half a Casey free-kick found the top corner from 25yds out – a goal that crowned a great performance to deservedly give him the Man of the Match award. On 42 Finnane had a chance to extend the lead as the men in black tried to add to the scoreline. It wasn’t long however when the second arrived after a very influential Jamie Fitzgerald, on as substitute after an injury, drove home from ten yds after a quality pass from Casey. Both combined again for the third with just seconds to go on the clock, this time Casey finishing in a crowded penalty area.

A big performance here from a Cahir team, all fourteen of whom played important roles on the night. Peake, to their credit had long spells of attacking football and could easily have put one or two on the score-sheet.

Looking back on a wonderful season, we all remember the heroics of Bartosz Opala in goal, his understudy Tom Kirwin; from Kirwin, Keelin Hickey, Cormac Looby, Lorcan Blake, Aaron Murphy, and Kevin Griffin in defence; the smart midfield play of Gerry Cronin, Liam Casey, Jamie Fitzgerald, Ian Flannery, James Walsh and Mikey O'Connor and the always effective attack of David Finnane, Kieran Davis, Ben McDiarmid and Dion Buckley - each playing their part through the hard season.

It is indeed a great result from the season’s efforts of the 11As – to bring a league and cup double home is without question a great achievement from any team, and one on which these talented players can only hope to build as the new season, just around the corner, unfolds. The management team Jim Buckley, Phil Blake and Christy Griffin would like to thank the players and their supportive parents for a great year. The boys have never failed in their dedication, their true grit and determination providing just reward.

Cahir Park 11A team:  Tom Kirwin, Lorcan Blake, Keelin Hickey, Kevin Griffin, Cormac Looby, Ian Flannery, Liam Casey, Gerry Cronin (capt.), James Walsh, Kieran Davis, David Finnane. Subs: Jamie Fitzgerald (for Walsh), Ben McDiarmid (for Finnane), Dion Buckley (for Davis).

Goal-scorers after the season’s twenty-one competitive games:

Kieran Davis 14, David Finnane 10, Liam Casey 7, Jamie Fitzgerald 6, Gerry Cronin 3,

The 11B Team played at Clerihan on Saturday and came away at the wrong end of a beating by their recent Cup conquerors. It could have been so different had chances not been taken up front whilst a couple of badly defended efforts resulted in scores at the other end. All in all, a day to put down to experience from a team that show potential for the future.

Cahir Park AFC Squad: Lukasz Kaminski, Luke Cagney, Ethan Rogers, Nathan Shine, Brian Littleton, Mathieu Czerniak, Joshua Keane, P J Hanrahan, Bartek Biniaszak, Dylan Walsh,  Adam Littleton. Subs: Richie Delahunty (for Czerniak), Sasha Kondraskin (for Hanrahan), Jamie O'Donovan.

The Under 10 TSSDL League B continued at Duneske in a lovely setting in brilliant sunshine.  Rangers had a bad day at the office in Clonmel Complex while Albion came from 2-1 down at half time to win 5-2 with goals coming from Joseph Quirke (2), Kevin Griffin and Kenneth Collins (2). Michaels had gone ahead on 8 mins with Quirke’s first goal equalizing things. The Park were almost ahead on 14 with Collins coming close following a great three man move involving Quirke and Leigh Devereaux. The Tipp side scored to take the lead to the interval. With some positional changes Cahir were a different team in the second 20. Collins did equalize on 24 mins after the same three players played a fine three man move.  A second goal made it 3-2 to the Park with Kevin Griffin adding a great goal direct from a free with nine mins left, Quirke wrapping up things for a fine home win.
